Born on a chairlift in Park City, Utah, action sports has always been central to Skullcandy’s culture which is why the brand has announced its annual, month-long “Skate with Buds” celebration of skateboarding, coinciding with International Go Skateboarding Day on June 21.
The month-long celebration kicked off this month with the release of three exclusive Skate with Buds Sesh® Evo earbuds.
Through its 2021 Sound Without Boundaries campaign, Skullcandy has partnered with multi-dimensional athletes, musicians and visual artists, known as “Boundary Breakers,” each sharing messages of change. The roster features several skateboarders–one of these personalities is skateboarder, founder, community organizer, speaker and model Briana King.
Briana was introduced to skateboarding at an early age but fell in love with the sport after moving to NYC at the age of 24. She immediately noticed that she was one of very few women of color in a sport dominated by white men and boys. Her love for skateboarding ran deep, and she made it her mission to make the sport more accessible to women, people of color and the LGBTQA+ community.
“When I was thinking about having meetups … I was just thinking about how to make everyone feel more loved in an environment that I’m obsessed with. I was like, yo, how do I make everyone feel the love that I’m feeling right now? Because everyone needs to feel this way,” said Briana King.
Briana founded @display.only, a safe space to share and organize community and skate meet-ups. She continues to host events to teach skateboarding and create a culture of acceptance within the skate community. To learn more, check out her website: brianaking.com.
Other Boundary Breakers who skate include Kyuss & Rasmus King, Hannah & Tim Eddy, as well as global ambassador Andy Anderson, who will be part of history this summer when skateboarding debuts at the Tokyo Olympics. During its “Skate with Buds” celebration, Skullcandy will share skate-specific content on social media channels featuring Boundary Breakers, special promotions and exclusive skateboard-themed products.
