A Shortboard Invitational Surf Contest To Benefit Jimmy Gamboa’s TheraSURF, Lyon Herron, & Babette Ho.
The Best Surfers from around the world to compete at Historical 1st Point, Surfrider Beach in a shortboard invitational event August 27th and 28th, 2011 in support of friends and family in need.
The Malibu Invitational is an invitational Pro/Am & Legend’s shortboard surfing competition to benefit Jimmy Gamboa’s TheraSURF, Lyon Herron, and Babette Ho. The contest will be held from 7:30AM to 5:00PM on Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th at world famous 1st Point, Surfrider Beach, in Malibu, Ca.
The surf competition is by invitation only and the event is open to the public for viewing from the beach.
The contest will feature Professional Surfers from around the world, Malibu Legends, and Jimmy Gamboa’s TheraSURF Free Surf which is an organization that focuses on healing kids with special needs by taking them surfing.

About Lyon Herron
5 years ago we started The Malibu Invitational surf contest to Save The Life of One of Our Own, young Lyon Herron. The first 3 years of our event were to help Lyon fight his battle with Gardner’s Syndrome. Our community whole-heartedly responded and Lyon has been successfully battling this rare disease ever since.
Year 4, Lyon (not in need) passed on The Malibu Invitational to one of his hero’s, Jimmy Gamboa, who founded the organization TheraSURF created to take kids with special needs surfing. However, back in November 2010 two new tumors were noted on each hip at Lyon’s quarterly CT scan, one of much greater concern than the other.
Lyon, his family, and his doctor’s felt it was imperative to have the tumor removed by their specialist at the Cleveland Clinic on June 15th, 2011. Lyon’s recovery was quick and easy as it marks his 20th surgery to date but Lyon’s medical bills have become hard for him and his family to stay on top of with their new insurance plan not fully covering these must needed surgeries and scans.
Unfortunately, Lyon’s disease is ongoing which requires CT scans every 3 months and upper and lower GI’s twice a year. He currently has pre-cancerous polyps in his stomach and duodenum.

TheraSURF was born by Jimmy Gamboa and his wife Kim Bordenave Gamboa with the help of family and friends in order to take kids with special needs surfing. TheraSURF focuses close attention to the intimate involvement of each child and their individual needs.
They are committed to giving the kids an opportunity to enjoy surf culture and be stoked in the water and on land including family and friends. There is nothing more powerful than sharing experiences such as this to fulfill lives and turn dreams into realities. Everyone has special needs…just some more than others.
About Babette Ho
5 days ago we learned about our friend Jeff Ho’s wife, Babette, who was very recently diagnosed to late stage advanced cancer. She too is in need of our help to fight her battle and with medical advances and great doctor’s today she can fight and win! Like Lyon, with fighting comes medical expenses and the Ho’s need our help to fight.
