Firewire partners with Wingnut

Wingnut's designs will compliment Firewire’s existing longboard program.

Firewire is stoked to announce a long-term partnership with Robert ‘Wingnut’ Weaver, one of the most iconic surfers of any generation who also starred in Endless Summer 2, and has spent the past 20+ yrs traveling the globe extending the Summer from China to Peru and beyond. With a reverence for the art of traditional longboarding, coupled with an appreciation for a more contemporary approach, Wingnut’s designs will compliment Firewire’s existing longboard program – currently anchored by 2X World Champion Taylor Jensen.

“We pride ourselves in building the very best surfboards that we can”, said Firewire CEO Mark Price, “so when one of the most influential longboarders ever chose to ride designs built in one of our technologies, it was a big deal for us”.

Wingnut worked with long-time Firewire design collaborator Dan Mann on one of the models, and Oahu-based traditionalist Mark Martinson on the other. The results are two distinct designs that will meet the needs of a broad cross-section of surfers, and will be offered in Firewire’s performance-proven, ascetically pleasing and eco-friendly TIMBERTEK construction.

Wingnut said of the technology, “I have been a fan of Firewire’s Timbertek technology since it was first released and I am looking forward to having my favorite shapes available soon. The way the EPS core and paulownia wood deck-skins enhance the momentum of the board is just amazing”.

The Wingnut models will hit US retail in early 2016, and globally shortly thereafter.

Firewire believes that minor refinements to the shape of today’s modern surfboards can only produce incremental performance benefits.  Exponential improvements in performance require the ongoing development of new materials, construction methods and radical shape, which, in turn, will fuel new design success.

In addition, with the increased eco-consciousness of today’s consumer, Firewire is constantly refining our raw materials to decrease the environmental impact of our boards.  Currently our surfboards emit only 2% of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that conventional polyurethane boards do throughout their lifespan.
